The teaching of Latin in schools? What is your opinion, could time be better spent on a more modern language or is Latin vitally important to form a basis of all the Romance languages ?

Does anyone know what’s going on with the MLPSI in the end? I hope the Government keep the programme going. I think it is quite short-sighted of them to get rid of a proramme that has done so much for the teaching of languages in the country.
Six core staff as well as 250 teachers are employed by the Initiative which faces the end of its existence at the end of the year. They haven’t even been given the chance to finish out the rest of the academic year. All this to save €2 million, which won’t even be the full saving as many of the staff will have to go onto the dole.
This abolition represents the low regard in which languages are held by the current Minister and underlines the importance of raising the profile of languages in the media and in Irish society in general in as positive a manner as possible. This move effectively means the disappearance of most teaching of modern languages at primary level.
There is a short video has been put together (link also below) which you can sign, comment on and share to show your support.

Please support this, talk about it, consider writing to the Irish Times, blog about it, tweet about it, Facebook it! The more people who are aware of this the better. I am concerned that this is the thin end of the wedge, and we should forestall this by supporting the Primary Initiative in as many ways as possible.
Hopefully, Mr Quinn will make this midwinter a little less bleak for those 250 teachers by reconsidering his actions.

I was surfing the net, as one does, and I came across an interesting website. http://www.notesinspanish.com/ The site provides free podcasts at beginner, intermediate, and advanced level. Along with each podcast, you can also download a worksheet. I thought it wouldn’t only help for listening but, to some extent, help for the oral as well. Some of the podcasts [...]

¡Hola! Can anyone tell me if they know of any website with notes for the role plays in the oral, por favor? I know there are a few for the Irish sraith pictuir, so I was wondering if there are similar for el Español?
¡Muchas gracias, amigos!

just back from an eventful week of doing Origami in national craft and design fair, met another origamist, more traditional style though, went to japanese restarant (yamamori) and had fried tofu ramen (apparently i eat like a chinese person…)

привет сегодня пятая часть декабря 2011:) so we covered more grammar and it went surprisingly well:) coincidently i’m studying the same grammar point in german so it all clicked into place really easily. i have to say one of the things that made me apprehensive about learning russian was the grammar. i had heard it was really hard. i’m lucky as i had had experience with german which has a similar grammatical structure. i have to say the grammar isn’t quite as scary as i thought it would have been. i love how much easier it’s become for me to hold an actual conversation in russian although these conversations include alot of ’ я не понимаю’ and
’Вы можете повторить, что, пожалуйста?’ on my part but i can definitely see improvement. до свидания:) -

SimonHola de nuevo Simon!
Yip, a teacher in a school not so very far away from yours! The opinion question is on the Leaving Cert paper where you have to discuss a social problem/issue…you will have no problem with this as you already have opinions! Keep cultivating that! Mr McCrohan will fill you in next year….just keep enjoying TY as is, everything you do will be of use in your language learning journey!
