I am a die hard DORAMA fan . (I thought I was alone.)
I’ve realised that students who watch drama take to Japanese easily.
I’ve even started to ask my 5th and 6th years to watch some dramas as homework to encourage an interest. Has anybody any ideas of programmes / online documentaries/ youtube clips that would appeal to those that don’t share my appreciation of fine drama..Looking for inspiration…

HELP!!!!
My laptop crashed & burned this weekend
and the chapter 10 test I had made out, but obviously hadn’t had time to upload to the Languages Initiative website, has now been lost forever! Along with all the other resources I’ve been pottering away at over the last few weeks So I’m just wondering if anyone has a chapter 10 test?! I can’t type in Japanese on the computers in school so if someone had a test made out it would save me a lot of copying and pasting of words to try put a test together!!!
Test was supposed to be tomorrow but due to snow, it has been postponed until Wed. so I have a little breathing space! Anything welcome!!

I am completely in a panic today and all because of SNOW! I now have only 40 minutes to prepare the kids for their Christmas exams. What happens to snow days? Are they lost forever? Will I ever get them back?
Are fifth graders in other schools extremely active? E.g. open days, career days, football?

Hello everyone! Just discovered this group.. quick question.. was planning to do a little on music in Japan in my next TY class. Have a good photo of me playing the koto! And can find bits and pieces on youtube i expect. But have no idea of what is going on in J-POP these days? Anyone recommend a clip or a band to inroduce to my students?? Any other ideas?
My TY groups recently did projects on various cultural topics and the group that did ”music” were able to tell me what is in the charts in Japan at the moment. Perhaps you could look up the current top 10 and then do a wikipedia or you tube search for the names that come up?! I’m sure you’d get lots of examples that way..
Also I have a handout in the TY resources section of the languages initiative website that I use when doing the topic of music.
Being that it’s coming up to Christmas you might also want to teach them some Christmas songs in Japanese? Things like Jingle Bells, Silent Night etc. are easy to teach as the kids already know the tune, so you just need to teach them the words. It’s good fun.

Hi all.. quick language question for you..
One of my schools is putting on a Christmas concert and as we have a few different nationalites in the school, we’re getting students from each country to do a quick ”in my country we say ….. at Christmas”. We’re also going to do it in each of the languages that is taught in the school.
I think though that they’re expecting something more exotic than ”meri kurisumasu” from the Japanese department!!
Any suggestions?Oh dear. Christmas really isn’t a big deal, is it? I seem to remember something about people going on dates on Christmas Eve and big lines for KFC?? Christmas is not universal.. maybe this is a point to be made … you could have them say shinnen omedetou gozaimasu?? !
Thanks for the reply Gretta.. Yes I had thought about using ”akemashita omedetou gozaimasu” but unfortunately that has nothing to do with Christmas!!
I see where you’re coming from but I don’t think the point is whether or not Christmas is universal, of course I will explain how Christmas is celebrated in Japan in my own Japanese classes, but this is for the school Christmas concert which is more about showcasing the pupils talents than making any statements!
I’m sure one of my TY students will be only delighted to dress up in yukata and step forward to announce ”in Japan they say … at Christmas”, I’m just wondering if anyone has any suggestions other than ”in Japan they say MERI KURISUMASU at Christmas”. If all comes to all that’s what I’ll use, just thought there might be something a bit more ”different” to use…
