I was surfing the net, as one does, and I came across an interesting website. http://www.notesinspanish.com/ The site provides free podcasts at beginner, intermediate, and advanced level. Along with each podcast, you can also download a worksheet. I thought it wouldn’t only help for listening but, to some extent, help for the oral as well. Some of the podcasts [...]

Nowadays, in a time of globalisation , it is vital that we communicate correctly , that’s why learning new languages is so important . However, learning a language should not only encompass the monotonous repetition of hour-long grammar and syntax study sessions, but be a more natural approach to the socio- and cultural application in every day life, eg. In many work places [...]

I studied in one of the “Donquijote” Enfocamp schools in Valencia. This was one of the most valuable experiences in my life. The [...]

It’s about time that I started this conclusion of my stay in Valencia. I’ve been asked to post a few pictures, stories, or make a video about Valencia and the whole experience. It’s hard, not only because I’m not a writer, but also because I miss Valencia. Writing about it makes me want to be there so much, I miss greeting people with kisses on the cheeks, and I miss having multi-lingual conversations with the locals.
So from this I am able to say that Valencia was a success.
Everything was well planned out and sorted; I didn’t need to worry about how I’d get from point A to point B. The school has all of that sorted out. Ms Mansilla brought us all the necessary places, and she was always on time. While we were in the bus we either kept quiet observing the city (which I did a lot), or we chatted about last night’s fortunes and misfortunes, all with Spanish radio in the background, which only played Spanish music! The activities we did as a part of the school day weren’t necessarily breathtaking. E.g. ‘’Polideportivo de Picassent: Piscina + deportes’’ ended up being a day at an open air swimming pool, not the biggest in size as well. Yet I have to say that other activities did live up to my expectations. For example, ‘’Visita al Museo Fallero De Valencia’’, was great! We saw all the fallas that were saved from previous years, but you’d have to know their history in order to understand what significance that had to us.
Our teacher, Encarna had a planned slideshow for some of the places we were to visit. We watched it the day before going there which actually made me interested. She also acted as a tourist guide, which understood when we’ve had enough of history, so I was never really bored.
Another one of Encarna’s abilities was to teach. Of course all was explained through Spanish, but I came out of the classroom each day with understanding of the topic. I’d need longer to see clear improvement in spanish but i did learn, she was really great at her job, and I’d recommend doing a course with this school if she was your teacher. One thing that I found necessary during this holiday was enthusiasm to learn. If you really want to learn and enjoy this experience to the full (as any other travelling experience I believe) you’d really want to be open-minded, and want to learn! It’s not like another one of those history classes which you just have to sit through, trying to keep your head off the desk, hoping tomorrow’s topic will be more interesting. Here everything you learn has something to do with your day to day life, and everything you do adds to your bucket of learning. Everything from trying to understand signs on shop windows, to monitoring local body language, it’s all a part of the language and of the city.
It was very early in the week that our class decided to go out and explore the nightlife. This doesn’t truly begin until half ten, but it lasts till the early morning hours as it’s the coolest time of the day. While sitting on ‘Plaza de la Virgen’ men kept coming up to us trying to sell cool beer, which does get annoying but is entertaining at the same time. One thing you have to try in Valencia is their water, or ‘Agua de Valencia’. Their cocktail composed of orange juice and other stuff, but don’t overdo it. Anyways, on the first night out we ended up talking to three 18 year old Spanish boys who turned out to be really sound, we spoke mainly in Spanish which was great because it was the right time to put our lessons into action. We met them another few times and it’s been hard to say goodbye for everyone at the end of our visit.
What I’m trying to say there is that without the enthusiasm towards learning I would have probably never spoken to them and missed out so much. Not that I encourage talking to strangers but if you’re with other people and safe, don’t be too shy.
There’s a load more I’d like to say but this should be enough for an idea of what Valencia is actually about. Feel free to ask anything, and I’ll try to answer what I can -

So far so good. =)
